A Small History Behind A Big Car

Everyone out there loves a muscle car. From the roar of that huge engine to the flames on the hood, it is hard to resist looking when you hear one rumbling down the road. But, most people don’t really know the history behind the “muscle car”, like who created the first one and when were they introduced on the market?

Almost every historian and car buff credits Pontiac with the first “muscle car” on the market, which was a variation on the Tempest, the 1964 GTO. This first muscle car offered a huge V-8 engine that boasted 389 cubic inches and a floor-shift manual transmission instead of on the column. With a newer, sleek look and trim inside and out that was to die for, who could resist the car that was born that year. These cars sold like hotcakes, even though Pontiac was in direct violation of a General Motors policy on the size of the engines that are placed in their vehicles. It didn’t matter, the muscle car was born, and everyone rushed to get in on the action.

These muscle cars had great performance that was fit for the street or the races, and allowed them to completely dominate every race that they were placed in. It wasn’t long before other auto companies wanted a piece of the action, and more styles of muscle cars were born. While some of these other muscle cars bragged about bigger engines and more options, the youth market in America didn’t care. The muscle car was all the rage because they embodied rebellion, style, and “coolness”. But, with every era comes an end, and in the later 1960’s there was an uprising about the prices and weights of these muscle cars, which prompted the auto manufacturers to create a “budget muscle car”, which carried names like the “Road Runner”.

Though they were wildly popular, the muscle car didn’t quite sell as many as their manufacturers would have liked, but their rise in popularity has not been matched since. No other type of car in history has been able to create such an air of personality as the muscle car has. But, toward the mid 1970’s, these smaller, budget muscle cars once again got a boost. The competition in the auto industry was heating up once more, and the muscle cars produced during this time boasted some of the biggest engines ever thought of, like the 450 big block. Although this created yet another spike in sales and popularity, concerns about the safety of these cars gave way to more protests and problems. With some of the other industries, like the insurance agencies, protesting the larger muscle cars and refusing to insure them, the sales of these powerful icons plummeted. Then, another crushing blow to the muscle car, the oil problems that plagued the world in the late 70’s and early 80’s ended the muscle car altogether, and auto manufacturers removed them completely from the market.

But, even today, the muscle car is still sought after by car buffs, collectors, motor-heads, and rebels in general. They are sought out, fixed up, and rumbling down the road in every town across the United States, and even all over the world. No matter how old or young you are, the muscle car still holds unquestionable bragging rights as well as an instant pass to “coolness”.

Chevrolet Casting Numbers and RPO Codes Defined Learn All About the Identification Of Your Car

I get a lot of people looking for information about their casting numbers, and RPO codes at my blogs, so I figured that it was about time that I demystified them a bit, since I have never written an article dealing with just this issue, I hope it helps you get your questions answered.

I will discuss Chevrolet, casting numbers and RPO codes in this article, and we’ll start with Chevrolet, a Chevrolet RPO code hols a lot of vital information about your car, and along with your vin you should decode your RPO and casting identification also.

They are two totally different things, you RPO code is located on a machined pad on the engine block, just in front of the passenger head, and your casting identification is located at the back of the engine block on the driver side and top the the transmission mount.

Your casting number will tell you the engine size, what model of car it was installed in; horsepower ratings, and the transmission that was installed, some of the this are fairly basic, but it does tell you the beginning of the information on your engine.

Lets take a casting number like 3970010 this engine block when decoded could have come from a few different cars, and you’ll need to compare it to the RPO code to figure out what it is, for this article we’ll say that it came from a 1969 Z/28 camaro.

The casting identification indicates that it’s is a 302 CID engine that’s rated at 290 HP, and it was built in 1969, and it’s a four bolt main block from a late model 1969 Z/28 camaro, and this is a good starting place, it give you a good foundation to build on.

There are a few things that you need to know about the next step, and that step is to decode your RPO code to see if they match, the first things that you need to look at is the suffix code from the RPO, or the last tow or three letters, in this case the last two letters.

If your trying to determine if the engine belongs in your 1969 Z/28 camaro, the last two letter in the RPO code should be DZ, if they are any other letters, the engine does not belong to your late model 1969 Z/28 camaro.

The other thing to be aware of is that people who like to scam other people may change the RPO code to make it look like it matches a certain car, just pay close attention to the stamping, make 100% sure that it looks like the factory stamped it, if there is any doubt, have a machine shop look in to it for you.

The other two things that an RPO code will tell you, are the date that the engine was manufactured, and the plant that it was manufactured in, which should match the plant that the car was built in, if it doesn’t, it’s time to be suspicious.

I know that I have concentrated on the camaro here, but all of Chevrolet’s code on their cars work the same way, I have used a camaro because I know the most about camaros, I have studied them all though, the numbers will decode like this on any older Chevrolet.

I have decoded huge amounts of Corvettes also, and they work the same, all of the Chevrolet products, from 1965 – 1973 use the same system, I haven’t looked at the newer models, so I can’t profess to know about them, but I have done my research on 1965 – 1973 model years.

I’ve been in the automotive business for about 20 or 25 years, I have worked in all facets of the industry, from parts to restoration, all different makes and models, I just want to keep people interested in the old cars because it’s where my heart is.

Why Ford Motor Company Is Losing Market Share Fast To Hyundai

Hyundai is fast taking over the American automotive landscape. They originally targeted GM and Ford, but now have Honda, Toyota and even luxury automotive names like Lexus and Acura in their sites. Ford has tried to keep up by purchasing Jaguar and reinventing the classic GT40, but it cannot keep up as these are small profit areas and Fords bread and butter was its Taurus in the 80s and early 90s. It lost this market share to Honda and Toyota in the 90s. Ford is trying to reinvent itself and find a new profitable niche, but it appears that the time for its demise is soon approaching.

Ford Motor Co. announced just this last week that it was going to cut another 30,000 or so workers, shut down several plants and cut production by over 20 percent. That is not a good sign. They even announced that they will be giving some dealers the boot. That is an even worse indicator. A cardinal rule of business according to the Harvard Business Review is that you never cut your sales force except to replace them with a more effective sales force. Else all you will do is reduce your sales. While Ford is closing down and circling its wagons, Hyundai is opening more dealers and rewarding and paying its sales staff better than ever.

If you have a good sales staff or organization and you reward them properly they can sell anything to anybody. Look, when Hyundai started selling in America, people were leary, there were new upstarts Kia and Daewoo was going down the drain. People did not trust or even want to consider Hyundai. Even with great incentives and a longer warranty they were not selling well. Then Hyundai revamped things and focused solely on its sales. According to Hyundai Motor America (HMA) President and CEO, Ok Suk (Owen) Koh:

We knew that our sales would make us or break us so we made that our number one issue. We took every thing positive that was being done in the entire industry and brought it all together at Hyundai. From innovation and new technology like Toyota to owner loyalty like Lexus. We knew that if we did this and kept sales as our top priority that we would come out on top.

Basically, Hyundai is gunning for top sales in America and worldwide and companies that cannot keep up, like Ford, are destined to fall unless they take drastic steps or measures.

Instead of cutting its production and, more importantly, its sales staff and dealerships, Ford should focus on fixing the problem. By cutting back you will only make it worse. What Ford needs to do is rekindle itself with the younger generation. It has tried and failed miserably. Expensive ads on American Idol did not work, reinventing the mustang has not yielded the results that were expected. It is time to get help. What Ford needs is a new leader. One that could easily revamp their product line and reputation and bring them back from the brink. Lee Iacocca, was the wonder boy of Chrysler. He brought them out of the same identical financial hole. Bill Ford is not and will not ever be capable of this. This is true in most mega rich and entrepreneurial families, the kids will never attain 1 millionth of the accomplishments of their fathers. They do not have the ability or the drive. It is not in them and never will be. It is not something you are born with or something you learn at Princeton or other Ivy League colleges, its something you learn through experience and hardship (something Bill Ford knows nothing about). What Ford desperately needs is Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs has become one of the greatest success stories of all time. In the 70s and 80s he created Apple Computer and dominated the personal computer market all from his garage and a few dollars. In the 90s he came back and brought Apple back from the brink and then he created and dominated the personal music player industry with the iPod. He also created Pixar animation studios and has dominated that area. Steve Jobs has the uncanny ability to take companies in entirely different fields and make them super successful. Ford and the automotive industry would be a cake walk for him. So, Ford, here is a bonafide guaranteed solution to your problems. Get rid of Mr. Ford and do whatever it takes to get Steve Jobs on board. You will then be able to open plants, increase the number of dealers, and increase jobs. Someone should email this article to Ford before it is too late.

Robert Allen is 27 years old, from Essex and is a hospital worker. He has one brother and one sister and lives with girlfriend Samia who met at an open mic gig.

Robert was in a gospel group called The Continentals and another group called Citizen K and is something of a showbiz all rounder. He is trained in method acting, has had professional dance training and can play the clarinet to grade 4 level. He can also play the piano and the flute which he taught himself.

Robert doesn’t come from a musical background although his aunt and uncle both sing in church. While music was one of his favourite subjects in school he was more interested in drama and attended a Performing Arts College where he completed a BTEC and HND in the discipline.

He cites his musical influences as Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin but describes his musical tastes as eclectic ranging from pop to soul to rock. He admires Mary J Blige and names her single “No More Drama” as one of his favourites. He said: “I’d love to perform with her one day”.

He auditioned for the X Factor in London and sang “Angels” by Robbie William’s and “Mustang Sally”. Simon Cowell was not entirely impressed when he described Robert’s performance as a “jack of all trades audition. Quite good at anything but not brilliant at much”. However, he put him through to the next round. Louis Walsh was more convinced when he said: “rough diamond, liked the voice, but didn’t like the song choice” while Sharon Osbourne completed the verdict with: “you didn’t perform first song – but yes”.

Robert performed The Beatles classic “Let It Be” on the first day of bootcamp and he impressed the judges. Mark Hudson commented that Robert “wants it so much” and that he didn’t come across as cocky or arrogant.

The second day saw Robert sing “Purple Rain” by Prince but he had to begin the song three times and asked the judges to excuse him. Judge Adrian Williams said: “I loved him yesterday, and although he messed up I love his voice. It’s a shame”. Sharon was frustrated that he messed up but agreed he could hit the notes when he needed to. Mark Hudson was less forgiving and pointed out that “he can’t make excuses as at some point he will have to sing and dance at the same time.”

Robert’s ultimate dream is to be married with a strong family and to own his own house. His dreams could come true should he win the X Factor, but he is up against it at the moment.

Cars In The Movies

Since movies were first screened cars has featured heavily in them.The Movie Bullitt released in 1968 starring Steve McQueen although probably not the first movie to feature a car chase was undoubtedly one of the original car movies of all time.


Audiences were stunned by the intense and dramatic footage of a Ford Mustang and Dodge Viper screaming through the streets of downtown San Francisco.


Many movies have featured dramatic car chase scenes. In 1971 The French Connection, a thriller about two NYC cops in the narcotics bureau starred Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. The film featured a thrilling car chase through busy streets of which the film is ultimately remembered for.


You would be mistaken to think the only reason cars would ever feature in movies would be for the sole purpose of an exciting chase. You would of course be wrong as many films have not only included cars in them but the car itself has been the main star.


In 1964 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a book by Ian Fleming was first published. The book was later made into classic movie with Dick Van Dyke in the lead role but of course the real star of the movie was the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The movie was essentially for children but it is one of those films that are entertaining for the whole family.


In 1969 we saw three Mini’s weaving through the traffic jammed streets of Turin in the fabulous The Italian Job starring Michael Caine. The red white and blue Mini’s were without doubt the stars of the movie which was later remade in 2003 and starred Mark Wahlberg.


In 1983 John Carpenters Christine was released. This was a story of a possessed regenerating car hell bent on killing. Arnie Cunningham played by Keith Gordon finds a Plymouth Fury in need of restoration. As Arnie rebuilds Christine he begins to change himself transforming from shy and nerdy to over confident and arrogant.


Possibly one of the most enduring and lovable of all cars in the movies is Herbie. Sporting the number 53 Herbie a Volkswagen Beetle has made five movies dating back to 1969 with his latest outing recently in 2005 starring Lindsay Lohan. The comical exploits of Herbie have won many peoples hearts with the main plot lines being David and Goliath natured.


Today cars in movies are still big box office draws. Pixar have recently released a movie witch features only cars in the line up. The animated adventures of Lightning McQueen voiced by Owen Wilson are hilarious and not too be missed.


Whilst we still drive cars in our lives there is no doubt they will be in our movies for years to come.

Innovation: Thinking Outside The Box And The Four Types Of Innovation

Why do we love new gadgets? Why did the Renaissance marked as the period when history, science, philosophy and religion has become so prominent that the ideologies used at this period is still being used until today? Why is it that we recognize those people who aimed for change and the others who have settled themselves with mediocrity are disregarded? Why?

Simple. Because they shed new light on what everyone else thought as final and dormant.

They change things radically and they created improvements that are way beyond the limits of what was presently thought of.

Central to innovation is the ability to think outside the box. This way, you will find newer modes of discovering what was previously discovered. To creating new stuffs from old. To extracting new ideas from classic ones. When we say innovation, its not just the ability to create solutions from nowhere but to create them from seemingly old things, only creativity was applied to them.

The box is the normal way of dealing with things. It is what every one does because it is the common notion. It is what most people don’t want doing but have no other choice but to go with the flow. It is said to be the assumptions that the majority takes. Thus, the only best way to deal with this assumption is to go against with it. Be aware though that once you do, you have to be firm with what you have set out o do. Often, going beyond the box means scrutiny, ridicule and unbelief from other people. And these very things make an innovator.

You can call innovation as something close to being wild, crazy and extremely foolish. But these fellows here do not suggest that they often fail. In fact, many of the craziest ideas helped zoom a product or two in the market.

Take for instance some of the greatest achievements that rooted from crazy innovations. Take not though that some people would eagerly tell you that these are products of mere luck or just the natural consequences of interwoven events. They may come from unexpected occurrences but the fact that people who initiated the innovations took the risks of using changes for a seemingly inappropriate stuff is something that deserves admiration.

Ford realized the potential of the automobile market through the failure of Edsel. Thus, the birth of the Mustang. Another good example is the way things are anticipated. Everyone knew in 1970’s that population would boom and that people would go after prioritizing education in the near future. But only Japan took action to create new technologies to support these future changes. Thus, they created robots to supplement for the needs. We may view things differently now because we are already in the actual situation as seen before but during those days, this idea of creating robots is something that was often dismissed, if not laughed at.

While innovation has a general concept surrounding it, it still has various issues to resolve through its many types.

One type of innovation is process innovation. This deals with bringing benefits through changing some of the already-established processes involved.

Product innovation, on the other hand, is the type that resolves innovation through creating new products from old ideas or new products from new ideas, depending on how the initiator deals with the condition. This is true with Motorola RZAR mobile phones which did not only bring new phone models into the market but also created a new niche.

Additionally, positioning innovation is the type that changes the branding of a certain product through switching.

Lastly, the Paradigm Innovation is the type that changes things radically through catering needs by turning something into another thing that is more feasibly good in the market.

Preliminary Sales Results at Barrett-jackson Collector Car Event

Barrett-Jackson, one of the leading companies that provide products and services to classic and collector car owners and the producer of “World’s Greatest Collector Car Events” has recently made history with the sale of the new 2007 Ford Shelby GT-H Convertible “Rent-A-Racer”. Unveiled by Carroll Shelby and Mark Fields, Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company, the Ford Shelby GT-H Convertible draws the crowd at the 5th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Palm Beach at the South Florida Expo Center. Along with the Ford Shelby GT-H, the exclusive Foose Coupe was also one of the stars at the auction event.

The 2007 Ford Shelby GT-H Convertible, one of the first units of Ford Mustang GT-H convertibles modified by Shelby Automobiles was sold for $250,000. The amount will go to charitable institutions. According to Ford, the Ford Shelby GT-H Convertible is the first vehicle model that has been unveiled outside a major automotive show, and sold at the same day.

Meanwhile, a unique Foose Coupe equipped with Mopar Hemi V8 engine was sold for a whopping $330,000. The winning bidder will have a private session with Chip Foose to personalize the car like choosing exterior and interior colors and adding optional components.

Other vehicle models auctioned in the event include several vintage Corvettes, a 1957 Bel Air convertible, a rare 1969 Shelby GT500, 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II convertible, an exclusive 2003 Panoz Esperante, 1966 Amphicar 770, 1959 Morgan Plus 4 roadster, and a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle 2-door sedan equipped with VW strut insert.

“We also had a wonderful moment just before a specially designed Cadillac CTS Sport Sedan that once belonged to Sir Paul McCartney was sold with proceeds benefiting the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson

“Darrell personally delivered a pink wheelchair to three-year-old Lana Rubin on the stage. That gift was made possible through the kindness of enthusiasts and it was moving to see the generosity of the people who are part of this hobby. And when the Cadillac sold, Barrett-Jackson matched the $60,000 winning bid, totaling $120,000 to the charity.” he added.

Three Ford Limited Edition Models to Debut at Nyias

Ford Motor Company has recently announced that it is presenting three new limited edition models to have their public debut at the forthcoming 2007 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) early this April. The three vehicles are the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, the F-150 Foose Edition and the Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition. According to Ford, “The trio of vehicles, including the most powerful pickup and most powerful Mustang ever from Ford, demonstrates how the company is leveraging key partnerships to create exciting new products.” Ford Motor Company’s limited edition model segment has significantly increased by about 50 percent, according to the Detroit-based automaker.

First off is the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, which will be launched next spring. This vehicle is equipped with monstrous 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine under its hood. An optional Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack is available to boost the engine’s output up to 540 horsepower (estimated output only). Inspired by the classic 1969 Ford KR mode, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR comes with a unique exterior stripe, 40th Anniversary exterior badge, lower front air dam with chrome-trimmed functional brake ducts, large 14-inch Brembo front brakes, distinctive Carroll Shelby-signature embroidered seats, and 40th Anniversary numbered dash plaque. Only 1,000 units of this vehicle will be produced.

In the first quarter of 2008, car fans will witness the launch of the 2008 Ford F-150 Foose Edition truck. Designed by Chip Foose himself, the F-150 Foose Edition also features racing stripes on the hood up to the tailgate. Other styling cues done by Chip Foose include new grille with horizontal bars and rocker moldings, a huge 22-inch wheel design, Chip Foose signature headrests and floor mats, leather wrapped center console, and Fosse serial numbered plate. At the heart of the Ford F-150 Foose Edition is supercharged Triton V8 engine pumping out 450 hp and pulls out 500 lb.-ft. amount of peak torque rotating at 4,000 rpm.

Meanwhile, the 2008 Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition features new design cues created by hip hop DJ Funkmaster Flex. Outside, the Expedition FMF comes with a two-tone Colorado Red-and-Black paint scheme with orange pin striping, side skirts, integrated fog lamps, and huge 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. On the inside, the limited edition SUV has FMF red logo headrests, a red-stitched steering wheel, 340-watt Audiophile Sound System, SIRIUS satellite radio, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and numbered plaque with Funkmaster Flex’s signature. The Expedition FMF retains its technical components including the engine with quality timing belt like VW Timing belt installed in VW Touareg, one of Ford Expedition’s competitors in the SUV segment.
